C. In case (of)
Klausa “in case (of)” biasanya diletakkan setelah main
clause, bukan sebelumnya. In case (of) diikuti kata
benda (noun).
>>> in case of + noun = if
there is (jika ada) + noun
e.g. (1) In case of guests welcome them = if
there are guests welcome them
(Jika ada tamu sambut[ah] mereka.)
(2)
I always keep the medicine at home, in case of emergency situation.
(Saya
selalu menyimpan obat di rumah berjaga sekiranya/ jika ada situasi darurat.)
Pada contoh (2), "I always keep the medicine at home", merupakan main clause, oleh karena itu in case (of) diletakkan setelahnya.
D. If only
1.
If only + present tense/will = expresses hope (mengungkapkan harapan)
- a. If only Ryu-san comes in time (we hope he will come).
Harapan akan kedatangan
Ryu-san.
- b. If only Farah will listen to Tom (we hope she will be willing to listen).
Harapan terhadap Farah untuk
mendengarkan Tom.
2. If only + past/past
perfect tense = expresses regret (mengungkapkan
penyesalan)
Maknanya sama seperti wish + past or past
perfect /yakni menyatakan bahwa situasi yang diinginkan tidak mungkin
terjadi.
- a. If only he didn’t drive so fast.
· We wish he didn’t drive
so fast (kami berharap dia tidak mengemudi terlalu cepat).

We are sorry he drives
so fast (kami menyesal dia mengemudi terlalu cepat).
- b. If only you hadn’t said ‘liar’.
· We wish you hadn’t said ‘liar’
(kami berharap kamu tidak mengakatakan ’pembohong’).

We are sorry you said ‘liar’ (kami menyesal kamu mengatakan ‘pembohong’).
3. If only + would = expresses
regret about present action (mengungkapkan penyesalan
terhadap kejadian di masa sekarang)
Sebagai alternatif dari If only + past tense.
Menyatakan keinginan seseorang untuk melakukan sesuatu secara berbeda.
e.g. If only Nevan
would drive more slowly (we are sorry that he isn’t willing to drive more
slowly).
Penyesalan terhadap Nevan yang tidak mengemudi lebih
pelan (maunya sih, Nevan mengemudi pelan-pelan saja, tapi... kenyataannya nggak).
